The Manipur state Veterinary Council, celebrated “World Veterinary Day-2011” on 30th April, 2011, on the theme “RABIES” at the Conference Hall of the Council. The celebration was jointly organized by the Manipur State Veterinary Council, and Department of Veterinary & Animal husbandry Services Manipur.

The inaugural function was graced by Shri. N. Loken Singh, Hon’ble Minister (Vety. & A.H.,Social Welfare and Minor Irrigation) as Chief Guest and Shri. I.S. Laishram, IAS, Principal secretary, (Veterinary), as President of the function. Dr. Th. Jeevan Singh, President Manipur State Veterinary Council, and shri. D.C. Karnatak, IFS, Additional Principal Chief conservator of Forest, Manipur, were also participated as Guest of Honour of the Celebration.

Highlighting the role played by Veterinarians on effective control and prevention of animal diseases, specially zoonotic diseases like RABIES, Shri M. Loken Singh, Hon’ble Minister, drew attention of the Veterinary Officers and scientist to pay more attention on preventive measures against casualties caused to mankind due to bite by mad dogs. He highlighted, the need to take extra precautions on the part of medical practitioners against transmission of diseases from animals to human beings. The Department is not only for vaccination of cattle and pet animals alone, it is also rendering its services in many other fields such as controlling zoonotic diseases and production of Meat, Milk and eggs.

The President of the function, Shri. I.S. Laishram, IAS, Principal secretary (Veterinary), has also stressed to improve the management of the Department of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Services Manipur, by filling up the vacant post of Veterinary Doctors, in different grades and smooth implementation of various plan schemes viz. Disease Investigation Laboratory, Cattle Development etc, so that people of Manipur State could get better services from the Veterinarians.

Manipur State Veterinary council President Dr. Th. Jeevan Singh, Guest of honour of the function stated that Veterinary Department is working to control rabies. He highlighted the importance of collective efforts on the part of scientist, officers and the Government to create awareness about the disease among the people and appealed to all the Veterinarians to work together to serve the people.

Shri. D.C. Karnatak, IFS, Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forest, Government of Manipur, on his speech as Guest of Honour, has recalled his past experience of post-bite anti-rabic vaccination to himself for prevention of RABIES. He appreciated the theme of WORLD VETERINARY DAY -2011, as a remarkable one. The inaugural function has concluded with vote of thanks from Dr. Ksh. Pabitra Singh, Registrar, Manipur State Veterinary Council.

The inaugural function was followed by a technical session.
